About Us
Mental Matters SA was founded by Gugu Masondo in 2018 after her hospitalisation at a psychiatric facility. Upon completing her programme, she was inspired to assist and spread knowledge about various mental health ailments and their management. She organised and held the first event in 2018, inviting Dr Nokukhanya Khanyile-Lenake – our VP – as one of the first speakers. Since then, Dr Khanyile-Lenake has consistently played a pivotal role, evidenced by her advocacy as a specialist paediatrician who is passionate about community health and empowerment.
Our Mission/Purpose
Purpose: We seek to de-stigmatize mental health in society, with a focus on youth and the black community.
Mission: To assist and spread knowledge about various mental health diseases and their management with the guidance of experienced professional and individuals living with mental health challenges.
Who Are We
Mental Matters SA is a non-profit mental health organisation dedicated to increasing understanding, reducing stigma, and empowering communities through the education on mental health. Part of our mission is to make accurate, accessible, and human-centred mental health knowledge available to everyone, particularly those with limited exposure to scientific or clinical perspectives.
To achieve this, we design and deliver bespoke educational experiences tailored for diverse audiences. Each event integrates two core pillars:

- Authentic Lived Experience
Together, these pillars create a learning experience that is informative, grounded in science, and deeply human.

- Hosting educative, informative, inclusive and accessible mental health awareness events that create a feeling of togetherness and safety within a community that has stigmatized mental health illness.
